Definition of measurement

Weitzenhoffer (1995) described measurement as "an operation performed on the physical world by an observer." To Stevens (1946) measurements was "the assignment of numerals to objects or events according to rules." Lord and Novick (1968) and Torgerson (1958) enhanced the precision of Stenvens' definition by noting that measurement applies to the properties of objects rather than to the objects themselves.
